Unequal sample sizes according to the square‐root allocation rule are useful when comparing several treatments with a control

چکیده

A common situation in experimental science involves comparing a number of treatment groups each with single reference (control group). For example, we might compare diameters fungal colonies subject to range inhibitory agents those from control group which no agent was applied. In this situation, the most commonly applied test is Dunnett's test, compares separately while controlling experiment-wise Type I error rate. analyses where all are treated equivalently, statistical power generally optimised by dividing subjects equally across groups. Researchers often still use balanced compared others. case, it fact optimal spread unequally: getting higher (n0) than k (n case). It has been previously suggested that simple rule thumb, so-called square-root allocation n0 = , offers better design, without necessarily being optimal. Here, show simple-to-apply substantial gains (over design) over broad circumstances and more-challenging-to-calculate design only minimal extra gain. Thus, urge researchers consider using whenever one treatments same experiment.

Bayesian sample sizes for exploratory clinical trials comparing multiple experimental treatments with a control.

In this paper, a Bayesian approach is developed for simultaneously comparing multiple experimental treatments with a common control treatment in an exploratory clinical trial. The sample size is set to ensure that, at the end of the study, there will be at least one treatment for which the investigators have a strong belief that it is better than control, or else they have a strong belief that ...

Planning sample sizes when effect sizes are uncertain: The power-calibrated effect size approach.

Statistical power and thus the sample size required to achieve some desired level of power depend on the size of the effect of interest. However, effect sizes are seldom known exactly in psychological research. Instead, researchers often possess an estimate of an effect size as well as a measure of its uncertainty (e.g., a standard error or confidence interval). Previous proposals for planning ...

Designing experiments for selecting the largest normal mean when the variances are known and unequal: Optimal sample size allocation

We consider the problem of ‘optimally’ allocating a given total number, N, of observations to k?2 normal populations having unknown means but known variances of,o;, . . ..oi. when it is desired to select the population having the largest mean using a natural single-stage selection procedure based on sample means. Here ‘optimal’ allocation is one that maximizes the infimum of the probability of ...

Testing and interval estimation for two-sample survival comparisons with small sample sizes and unequal censoring.

While the commonly used log-rank test for survival times between 2 groups enjoys many desirable properties, sometimes the log-rank test and its related linear rank tests perform poorly when sample sizes are small. Similar concerns apply to interval estimates for treatment differences in this setting, though their properties are less well known. Standard permutation tests are one option, but the...

Economic Statistical Design of Multivariate T^2 Control Chart with Variable Sample Sizes

Today, quality improvement and cost reduction are key factors for achieving business success, growth and position. One of the primary tools for quality improvement and cost reduction in online activities of statistical process control is control charts. As the need for monitoring several correlated quality characteristics is extensively growing, the use of multivariate control charts become...
